YOUR KEYWORD LIST
Your Keyword List is your Master Blueprint to a successful online marketing campaign. Knowing what keywords are profitable, how to determine exact traffic numbers, and how to find keywords that convert into sales are key to being successful online.
The best way to do this is to first determine exactly how much traffic you want to generate per month to your website. Only you can determine how much volume you can handle, how often you can convert a visitor into a sale, and how many visitors your servers can handle. I will tell you how to get a list for 1,000,000 monthly visitors in this example.
Using the Adwords Keyword Tool, I can see how many users are searching for a particular keyword in any given month and on average, so I would recommend using this tool on every campaign. Google has the best representation of data on the internet today. We will type in the most common keyword we will be using in this campaign. Google will respond with all the results of relative keywords with a fair amount of searches along with a plethora of data including a Global Monthly Searches or (average monthly searches).
If we intend on being on top of Google for all of our keywords (which should be our intentions), we can expect to see 50% of Google's monthly search volume once we have attained that goal. So, if we are aiming to get 1,000,000 visitors each month from SEO efforts alone, we will want to build a list that receives a minimum of 2,000,000 searches each month and prepare to invest enough efforts or budget to get "top ten" ranking for each of your keywords.
We also want to be sure our keywords are sought-after, which is a good indication of how well they convert. We can do this by using the Adsense auctions to see what the current bid is for the PPC ads. We can also right-click on one of the Top Ten's Home Page and click "view page source" (in IE use Page Tools). Scroll down to where you see <meta name="keywords"> and see what keywords the competition is targeting.
